Hurricane Katrina affecting
blood supplies and services
throughout the South.
Blood Donors Urgently Needed
August 30, 2005, San Antonio) – With Hurricane Katrina pounding the Louisiana and Mississippi Gulf Coast, blood donation services there are expected to be interrupted for several days. South Texas Blood & Tissue Center is on stand-by alert to assist blood donation sites in the New Orleans area. Already, The South Texas Blood & Tissue Center has been asked to assist with laboratory testing services. Because of the current low blood inventories of the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, we are urgently asking eligible blood donors to donate in order to help the Hurricane victims once we are called to ship blood into the affected area.
With the upcoming Labor Day holiday around the corner, the community blood supply is expected to drop to low levels. Eligible donors are urged to donate as quickly as possible to assist both our community and those of Louisiana and New Orleans. Anyone 17 years of age weighing at least 110 pounds and in good general health may donate blood. Donors must present photo identification.
