"O" Donors Urgently Needed  (July 7, 2005)

“O” Donors Urgently Needed

The blood inventory has reached critically low levels due to heavy and unexpected patient transfusion needs. This has depleted the type O blood supply to critical levels. All blood types are needed but type O is especially in demand. While the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center typically sees a drop in donations during the summer months this season has shown a more dramatic decrease.  We are requesting donors come forward as soon as possible.

Norman Kalmin, CEO/President and Medical Director of South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, stated:  “Currently, other blood centers across the nation are also facing shortages. The summer months have always proven a critical time for blood donations.  South Texans must depend on each other to maintain a safe and adequate supply.”

South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, which serves more than 100 hospitals and clinics throughout South Texas and relies on volunteer donors, is asking all eligible donors to give blood.  To accommodate donors, South Texas Blood & Tissue Center headquarters is open from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, and noon to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday.  Please visit our locations page for directions or the events page to find a blood drive near you.

Anyone 17 years of age weighing at least 110 pounds and in good general health may donate blood.  Donors must present photo identification. Donors should eat at least four hours before their donation, and drink plenty of fluids, such as water and fruit juice, before and after donating. Fasting is not recommended.
