"Organ Donors as Tissue Donors"
Wednesday, March 10, 2010
1:00 PM to 2:30 PM

Most organ donors are also tissue donors. Requirements for testing for transmissible diseases are very different between organ and tissue donors and this presents potential for delays, discrepant replicate test results and communication failures. View flyer here.

May 4, 2010 - "Hematology for Blood Bankers"

Brenda Barnes, MSEd, (MTASCP)SBB, Program Director, Clinical Laboratory Science and Assistant Professor, Allen College, New Hartford, Iowa

Transfusion therapy guidelines used today rely, in part, on hematology tests such as hemoglobin, hematocrit, prothrombin time (PT), and activated partial thromboplastin time (aPTT). Blood bank personnel often do not know what these tests measure, and what the test results mean. After a basic review of the different tests done in hematology, the indications for blood products will be presented. Cases will be used

to illustrate the concepts.

June 1, 2010 - "Resolving Serologic Problems with Limited Resources"

Marilyn Moulds, MT(ASCP)SBB, Reference Laboratory Immunohematology Specialist, LifeShare Blood Centers, Shreveport, Louisiana

Resolving serologic blood bank problems with limited resources can be a challenge. The skills of a trained technologist are essential as well as the right "tool of the trade". Among the topics to be discussed will be Techniques to phenotype RBCs, how to perform antibody detection and identification, investigation of transfusion reactions, warming reactive autoantibodies and hemolytic disease of the newborn.

July 6, 2010 - "Disaster Management, How Prepared are You?"

Daniel Madrigal, BS, MT(ASCP)SBB, Quality Assurance Supervisor, UTMB Blood Bank, University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, Texas

This presentation will look at the different types of disaster. The speaker will discuss survey results on Disaster preparedness (pre & post) and scenario disasters.

The speaker will also review bacteria and parasites associated with adverse events in transfusion. In conclusion, there will be a brief review of emerging disease that may or may not carry concerns for the United State Blood supply.
