Susan Dick, Dr. Paul Shaughnessy and Leslie Lucio gather at the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center headquarters to celebrate Doctors' Day, a day set apart to thank area physicians for their skill and caring.

Susan Dick received a bond marrow transplant in August of 2007. Today, she's in total remission - all because a man on the West Coast signed up with National Marrow Donor Program.
Leslie Lucio received a cord blood transplant for treatment of non-Hodgkins lymphoma - all because a mother donated her newborn's umbilical cord blood.
Both of these ladies are alive today because of a caring stranger.

Dr. Paul Shaughnessy, Director, Adult Blood and Marrow Transplant of the Texas Transplant Institute shares his thoughts:
It is truly an honor and a privilege to work with the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center and the National Marrow Donor Program to help provide the highest level of care for bone marrow transplant patients through the Texas Transplant Institute at Methodist Hospital. I am continually amazed by the strength and determination of patients with advanced cancer who come to us in need of a bone marrow transplant, and fight through, not only the treatment itself, but the long recovery afterward. It is also gratifying to see the science and advancements of research pay off right here in San Antonio with the development of the Texas Cord Blood Bank at the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, which allows patients to receive transplants who could not otherwise find donors. I wish all people could have the privilege I have to talk with some of these special patients, who at one time didn't have a lot of good options, but now are enjoying productive lives because of the generosity of others who volunteer to be donors. |
