“Thanks to people I will never know, I have lived to see four great-grandchildren born.” More than 100 strangers saved her life and she counts herself among the luckiest people alive. After Mary Petty had six-way bypass surgery at age 77, she began bleeding badly.“They didn’t know if they could save me,” she remembers. “Thanks to people I will never know, I have lived to see four great-grandchildren born.” During her surgery and post-surgical crisis, she required 114 units of blood and several tissue grafts. “The doctor said they literally glued me back together again with tissue donations,” Mary says. “How marvelous to be able to extend lives by the blood and tissue donations that south Texas people are generous enough to give,” she says. “Children, nature and plants, in that order, have been my life work and I say, ‘thank you, thank you’ to the people who enabled me to give more years to these things I love.” |
